Surgery and Sunshine in Chennai

A sixty nine year old British lady has undergone a High flex Knee replacement surgery through a small incision at the Venkataeswara hospital in Chennai. This procedure is not routinely available in the UK NHS says Orthopedic surgeon DR.A.K.Venkatachalam, of www.kneeindia.com who performed the operation. Undeterred by Osteo-arthritis, a retired school teacher from the north east England flew here to have a High flex Knee replacement. Her knees failed her rapidly over the last two months; she did not bother about inquiring for public treatment in the National Health Service (NHS). Private surgery in the UK also was beyond her budget.
She wanted private surgery in India as she had heard many good stories about Knee surgery in Chennai and checked it out with her GP. She located Dr.Venkatachalam, an orthopedic surgeon in Chennai who had performed the first high flex Knee replacement in Tamilnadu for a Muslim Doctor besides for other British patients. With aquickly serviced visa from the Indian High commission in Edinburgh and instant flight reservations arranged by the Taj Medical group she boarded the flight from Teeside airport with her husband, George.
Two days after her arrival, a small incision (Minimally invasive procedure) High Flex total knee replacement was done. Barely a week after surgery, she was able to walk with a frame, bend to touch the floor with her hands, get more than ninety degrees of bending. She discarded painkillers within a week. She spent 10 days in hospital. While she was recovering form surgery, her husband received Dental treatment and both got new glasses. (Comprehensive medical care at reasonable costs)
Talking about the surgery that he has performed Dr.Venkatachalam says a minimally invasive operation involves making a cut in the skin about 4- 5 inches long as opposed to 8 to 10 inches in a traditional Knee Joint replacement. Special instruments are used. However the same prosthesis is used. It is not reinventing the wheel but making the operation more patient friendly. Minimally invasive knee replacement spares tissue dissection, reducing post-operative pain, avoids blood transfusion and accelerates recovery. A High flexion prostheses (available from one company Zimmer only) permits the patient to regain normal bending of 155 degrees.

High Flex knee replacement India
Osteoarthritis of knees predominantly affects people in their sixties or seventies. Total knee replacement is a permanent solution to alleviate pain and improve quality of life. However there have been shortcomings in widespread acceptance of the procedure. There is a feeling amongst Indians that the implants available in the market do not allow more than 100 degrees of knee bending. These patients complain that they are unable to squat on the floor or climb stairs with standard implants. Even computer assisted knee replacement cannot achieve high flexion unless the prosthesis is designed to provide an extra bend. This is a great disadvantage to majority of South Indians who prefer to squat on the floor for prayer, social activities and meals. So, many people refrain from undergoing knee surgery in India and suffer in silence.
Now with the advent of a new type of prosthesis, people need not be deterred from having a knee replacement. A new prosthesis allows knee bending up to 155 degrees though not automatically. The patient has to be motivated to regain high knee flexion and participate in early and aggressive physiotherapy. They should not be obese and the pre operative knee bend should be above 90 degrees. This prosthesis is implanted by special instrumentation which is minimally invasive and does not damage the tissues. Hence post operative pain is less and rehabilitation is faster
High flexion knee prosthesis - Special knee implants are now available in India. These allow the knee to function more naturally by providing more flexion or bending. This satisfies Indian, and South Asian requirements of kneeling for prayer, sitting cross legged on the ground for meals or social purposes. Muslims in particular need this to offer prayers. Japanese customs also require high knee flexion. Even westerners have begun to appreciate the benefits of high flexion knee prosthesis as they can pursue hobbies like gardening and are also gratified for the ability to do recreational activities. Special instrumentation allows the operation to be performed through a modified new surgical approach without dividing the thigh muscles (Quadriceps). Hence post op pain is less and the patient will cooperate with the physiotherapist to do the required exercises regularly.
These high flex knees have been inserted into local and international patients in Chennai recently by Dr.Venkatachalam, Consultant orthopaedic surgeon, Chennai.
